LEMON CAKE

The real name for this cake should be "Dom's mum's lemon cake".

It is one of the easiest lemon cakes to make and the recipe comes from Dominic at Bellau Kitchen.  It's his mum's recipe and he recently (two months ago already!) wrote about it as you can see here.

Once I was reminded of it I couldn't wait to make it again myself - I first made it years ago and wrote about it here.  It's a delicious cake with a lovely texture, so quick to rustle up but doesn't hang around - it's very moreish (as my mum used to say).  Highly recommended.

You may well wonder why there is a picture here of our cat Daisy having forty winks!

Well, at long last we will soon be on our way to France!  It's been a trial getting organised as you might like to read here and there is still much to do.  The blog will be going to sleep for a while and hopefully my next post will be from our house in France!

Night, night!

  1. I do love a good, simple lemon cake. Just perfect for a summer afternoon.
It's horrible that it's so difficult to get to France in today's world. Quelle galère! Back in my travelling days (not that long ago, although it seems a long time ago now), heading to France was easier than getting to many parts of England. The chance to nip over for lunch and un petit peu d'air seems like a golden age now. I wish you bonne chance for your trip.

    1. Thanks Phil, with each day the excitement and nervousness are growing in equal measure. As you say, oh for the days when it was so, so easy!

  2. After feeling a bit stumped on what to bake for father's day last Sunday, your post popped up in my blog feed and reminded me I hadn't tried this recipe yet... so I baked it! It went down an absolute storm and like you say, very more-ish and great, fluffy texture. I think the majority of the cake was gone in a day.

    1. Hi Jo, I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's a keeper - well not the cake, as you say, it doesn't hang about for too long!

  3. So, did you get to France? Silence suggests you didn't. We didn't either and it was a blow. The two-day journey nearing its end as we cross the Millau bridge, uplifted as if by those magnificent upsweeping cables which, from 15 km away, look like a fleet of yachts. Ordering a pression at a bar and then forgivingly accepting bottled beer. because they don't have the machine. Sympathising in French: Ce n'est pas grave. The life-giving 10 m pool at the side of the villa. Instead it's Wales, a country oppressed by the English and deserving our further sympathy. Learning to sing All Through the Night as Ar Hyd y Nos.

    1. Roderick, not yet! We are nearing the day of departure and beginning to get twitchy about whether either side will change the rules again, leaving us trapped in the UK yet again.
Your description is so familiar, I can picture every moment of your arrival, having made that trip to Milau myself by motorcycle some time ago. Add stretching aching limbs and sinking into a nice cool pool, as you say, life giving.

    2. Having lived in France for 7 years I miss it a lot. Hoping to get there to see friends in the Autumn. Lived in Deux Sèvres, Poitou Charente. Being Welsh, not sure I agree with my country's being oppressed by the English nor deserving sympathy! Glad you're learning to sing in Welsh. Cymru am byth!
